This year, Unravel Festival of Knitting at the Farnham Maltings (20-22 March) will see the unveiling of an installation entitled Growth. The piece is by local crochet artist Barbara Touati-Evans and has been especially commissioned for Unravel.
The centrepiece of the work is a 4.85 metre long hanging sculpture made entirely of wool. Twisting and looping, this could be a strange tropical plant or creature. It is designed for the space, attracting the eyes of the viewers to the height and echoing the twists of the stairs.
The artist was originally inspired by a technique called hyperbolic crochet developed by thr mathematician Daina Taimina. The technique of increasing or growing at regular intervals, enables the fabric to literally take a life of its own and to become 3-d without the need for additional structure.
The title alludes to other types of growth like plant and molecular growth.
